Meet Commissioner Barry Cohen


Commissioner Barry Cohen is no stranger to our town and neighbors. As a Miami Beach native, Barry attended elementary, junior and high school locally. Barry has been a Surfside resident calling it home for the last 30 years and raised his 3 children in Surfside with his wife of over 35 years.

Barry ran for Commissioner in 2014 and was popularly elected by the vast majority of voters. His priorities included advocating local park improvements, reducing residential property taxes, addressing town-wide parking issues, beautifying our neighborhood along with upgrading our utilities and town website to better serve residents while maintaining our quality of life and unique charm.

Commissioner Cohen got to work immediately upon assuming office. His law background provides him with a unique perspective and affords him the ability to address issues with an analytical thought process. He has brought expertise, objectivity, common sense and vision to our town’s Commission with a passion to do what is right while improving life in Surfside.

Barry has a unique knowledge of tourism and by the age of 18 yrs. old he was in charge of all business operations for his family's local business in the hotel and restaurant supply industry. Commissioner Cohen earned his undergraduate Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Miami – School of Business Administration in 1981. He earned his Juris Doctor Degree from Pepperdine University – School of Law in 1984. From 1988 – 1990 Barry served as Chairman of the Planning and Zoning Board for Surfside working to preserve Surfside’s character from over development and acted as Secretary of the Surfside Charrette Committee in 2006.Barry championed our residents to ensure that our beaches remain safe and played an instrumental role in demanding accountability from developers thereby achieving a settlement for Surfside. Commissioner Cohen delivered measureable results and worked with his colleagues to bring down millage rates in Surfside.


 Barry has been a member of the Florida Bar, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida and the Bankruptcy Bar since 1986. As an attorney, Barry has worked with some of the finest local law firms and has represented clients with a broad range of needs and expertise.  Barry has been in private practice for the last 28 years specializing in real estate and commercial litigation having been involved in business since the late seventies. 

In both his professional work and service on behalf of the residents in Surfside, Commissioner Cohen prides himself on friendly, professional service while working to provide the best possible outcomes  and results for those he represents. Barry understands our town and has the experience along with a real vision for the future of Surfside.

Commissioner Cohen has formally announced his candidacy for re-election and is counting on your support to continue serving on behalf of Surfside residents.  He's available and eager to meet and discuss the issues that matter most to you.
